Per raccogliere informazioni su una bomba batteriologica a tempo, installata a Los Angeles, Sean Archer dell'FBI si fa trapiantare la faccia di Castor Troy, criminale internazionale che, dopo aver collocato l'ordigno, è ricoverato nell'ospedale di un carcere. Uscito dal coma, Troy si sottopone alla stessa operazione e s'infiltra nella vita professionale e privata di Archer.
